Parabens are the most widely used preservatives in cosmetic products. Chemically, parabens are esters of p-hydroxybenzoic acid. The most common parabens used in cosmetic products are methylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben. Typically, more than one paraben is used in a product, and they are often used in combination with other types of preservatives to provide preservation against a broad range of microorganisms.
They are used in a wide variety of cosmetics, as well as foods and drugs. Cosmetics that may contain parabens include makeup, moisturizers, hair care products among others.
Parabens can mimic the hormone estrogen, which is known to play a role in the development of breast cancers.
“I was looking for an organic product that really worked for me, but I couldn’t find one,” says the 28-year-old Victoria’s Secret Angel, who grew up rolling around her grandfather’s vegetable garden in rural Australia, and studied nutrition before taking up modeling full-time.
Kerr has gone back to her roots, with a new skin-care line, Kora Organics by Miranda Kerr, inspired by her family’s own health and beauty remedies. A play on the word core, the concept for Kora ties into Kerr’s holistic approach to well-being—nourishing the body “from the inside and outside,” as she puts it. Along with natural ingredients like rose-hip oil, olive oil, and pomegranate, the secret to her line is Noni juice, an elixir said to aid cell renewal, which is made from a fruit indigenous to Tahiti, that Kerr has been drinking daily since she was a teenager. “I used to put it on my skin if I had a pimple or sunburn. It’s like food for the skin,” she says. Indeed, it is featured throughout the range of the line, in products from her Blemish Gel and Hydrating Day and Night Cream, to a gentle, paraben-free Essential Body Wash, which she uses to bathe her eleven-month-old son, Flynn.
“I was really the guinea pig for Kora; I tested everything,” says Kerr, who had each formula flown to her from the organic laboratory in Melbourne where it was developed. The Rejuvenating Foot Balm proved exceptionally fun to try out. “Being on my heels all the time, I wanted to create a cream to put on after a long day,” she says.
My Daily Beauty Posts aka DBP.
Since about two months ago, I have started a skin and hair ‘vegan diet’. No, It’s not what it sounds like – it has nothing to do with food. It’s a diet of vegan products, ranging from shampoos and conditioners to cleanser gels and moisturizing creams, and makeup!
It all started with my mum, showing me that there are thousands daily beauty products that contain harmful chemicals: some of the most common ones are the different types of parabens, benzone derived chemicals, PPG and PEG. It is therefore important to use products that do not harm us like they do. First of all, I thought this was just something stupid people are saying to attract consumers to organic products, but then I realized it is true – why should we have chemicals in our daily beauty products? Shouldn’t it be natural and derived from minerals or plants? The answer is yes, it should but most of the brands (high-end brands, and normal street ones e.g. Dior, Mac, Lancôme, Clarins, Clinique) use the above mentioned chemicals in many of their goods.
So, why should we use organic products? From my own experience, I can tell you that one month after starting to use an organic cleanser, lip balm, shampoo & conditioner, moisturizer and mineral makeup, the results were pretty clear. My skin still has black spots and pimples, but that’s just because it’s winter and I’m a teenager – I have to work on not eating so much junkfood and chocolate. But it is not more fresh, luminous and it looks much better even when I’m not wearing makeup. My hair feels lighter, much softer and more manageable when I brush it. The results are what normal brands and products promise us, but which never actually work.
On my Daily (or weekly) Beauty Posts I am going to introduce you to this new ‘beauty diet’, inform you about the harmful chemicals, about brands you could use, I will make reviews of the products I have tried and answer any questions that my followers have.
I’m really looking forward to this, I feel it’s such a good way of feeling good and happy with your image and it’s also a healthy beauty lifestyle.
